What do flea bites look like?

Human flea bites generally occur along the ankles and lower portions of the legs. It may causes a slight irritation or itch in some people while others with extreme allergies will sometimes break out into hives and have excessive swelling. Children tend to have more sensitive skin and as such, flea bites seen in children are usually more severe than in adults.

Treating Flea Bites

Before you run to your family doctor to seek medical treatment, here are some home treatments for flea bites that you may try especially if it's just a mild case of allergy.

1. Wash affected area with a mild antiseptic soap or detergent

2. Put an ice pack over the affect area. This will help in reducing swelling and inflammation

3. Apply some calamine lotion to relieve the itch

4. A mild steroid cream like hydrocortisone which are easily available from a local pharmacy will be useful in relieving the swellings and itch more rapidly.

As always, prevention is better than cure. Fleas breed at a rapid rate and getting rid of fleas can be an uphill task. Flea control requires an integrated plan, which involves treating your pets, entire house, backyards and gardens. All these require both great efforts and persistence but will be all worthwhile when you get to finally declare your home flea free and bites free!

Pick up a freshly washed piece of garment from the pile of your laundry; hot out of the dryer, does it smell fresh and clean or does it have peculiar odors or has a distinct sour smell? Most of us have been through situations when it was simply impossible to get the odor out of clothes even after running them through two wash cycles. If your have been trying to wade your way through piles of laundry that does not smells less than fresh even when they are just out of the dryer, here are some simple tips that can be used to ensure that your clothes come out smelling fantastic each time.

The Basics

How fresh your laundry smells will depend on scores of factors such as how dirty the clothes were when you put them in the washing machine, the detergent used, the load of the machine and the type of water (hard or soft) etc. So, it is essential to follow manufacturer instructions for both the appliances as well as the washing products such as detergent and fabric softeners

If you want your laundry to smell good, you need to start with a clean washing machine. One of the easiest ways to ensure that your laundry appliances do not smell musty and dank is to not leave any clothes in them once you are done washing. If your washing machine still smells like something died in it, fill it up with hot water. Don't throw in the clothes as yet and don't switch the machine on. Just pour in 2 cups of distilled white vinegar in the machine and let the liquids stay put for about half an hour. This will take the musty odor out of the machine which gets easily transferred to freshly washed laundry. You may also want to try out one of the other deodorizing products specially designed for washing machines and dryers.

Turn on the machine now and let the water and vinegar concoction gush through every part of the washer, use the regular water cycle. Then, add the load of laundry with one capful of detergent and let the washing machine do its job. After the clothes have gone through one each cycle, pick one up and smell it to make sure that everything is good.

Put the clothes in the dryer as soon as you are done washing them and use a scented fabric softener sheet when drying your clothes.

Other tips to get fresh smelling laundry include using very hot water to wash clothes (whatever is permissible for a particular type of fabric) and drying your clothes on the line. The fresh air and the sun shine can get your clothes smelling really fresh.

How Do You Like Your Laundry To Smell?

There are two schools of thoughts when it comes to fresh smelling laundry; people who want their clothes to smell good and those who just want them to smell clean without any odors. If you fall in the later category, the vinegar and water mixture will prove very useful. You don't always have to go through the entire machine cleaning procedure. Just add a cup of vinegar with the laundry load to the machine along with a non scented detergent and this should do the trick

Dealing With The Real Smelly Laundry Jobs

The above tips can work wonders for normal clothes but we all have had to deal our fair share of laundry nightmares from time to time; from cigar odors, to kitty pee and from the disgusting smell of mildew in the towels to the stench of sweat in the armpits of your clothes. Here is a look at two powerful substances that can help you to tackle the truly messy laundry jobs.

Cigar: Not everybody appreciates the smell of a Cuban; particularly, when it is emanating from your clothes. To get the smell of cigars and cigarettes out of your clothes, soak them in some warm water with a few drops of some dish soap such as Dawn for about 10 minutes. The next step is to put the clothes in the washing machine the Dawn laced water and all; give them a few swirls and soak again for 30 minutes. Run the normal wash cycle and the let the clothes get spin dried. Spray a product called Ozium on the clothes while they are still wet and transfer them to the dryer or line-dry them.

Mildew: If your clothes smell of mildew, use good old Borax to get rid of the smell. Mix 2-3 tablespoons of Borax in the water, it will not only remove the musty odor but will also kill the fungus and bacteria in the clothes. However, do not use Borax if you are hand washing your clothes.

Pee: Oh yes, this is a tough one, baby pee or the real worst kind kitty pee. Most people would simply discard their clothing after a pet toilet training mishap; however, there is a way to get the foul smell of urine out of the clothes. Since the stench is strong, you will need to bring in the heavy artillery such as baking soda and vinegar.

Start by applying a paste of baking soda and water on the areas that have the urine stains, let the mixture sit on the fabric for a few minutes; do not rinse the mixture out yet. Add a cup of vinegar to some hot water and put the clothes through a normal wash cycle in the washing machine. These two steps are usually enough to remove baby pee odor but you may have to repeat in case of kitty pee.

You can also use the mixture of baking soda and water on the armpits of your shirts to get rid of sweat stains and odor. Mix some Borax with water to soak your socks to get rid of the smell and the bacteria in them.

These are some of the most effective ways to get great smelling laundry. The best part of using these natural products is that they do not leave harmful chemicals back the cloth fiber. Vinegar, Borax and Baking soda are easily available and incredibly cheap. So, the next time you have smelly laundry on your hands, you know what to do.

Soaps are one of the basic necessities that human beings require for daily usage in order to aid them in cleaning and bathing. Soaps are available in the form of hard solid bars as well as in the form of condensed liquids and are the commonest means of washing and cleaning used in combination with water. While historical evidences go to prove that soaps were prevalently used since antiquity, the earliest specimen of its usage was found from the powder obtained form the Sapindus tree used by the ancient Indians. Moreover, engravings in Babylon obtained around the 3 rd century BC have also revealed the ingredients required to manufacture soap. Similar proofs have also been found in the Egyptian papyrus and in Roman history. The manufacture of soap is not a very complex process. Soap is formed potassium or sodium salts obtained from the fatty acids and they are recovered by means of the process of saponification which includes a reaction between lye and fat.

There are various reasons because of which soaps are considered to be ideal for the purpose of cleaning. There are two different kinds of molecules i.e. polar molecules like water and non-polar molecules like oil or grease. The soap molecules adhere easily to these polar and non polar molecules and thus aid in cleaning. Whether attached to skin or clothing, these soaps are efficient in removing stains from clothes and helping in removal of dirt from the skin and thus aiding in cleaning successfully. The hydrocarbon or fatty content in the water makes it suspend the oils and dirt accumulated and the ionic constituents in soap make it soluble in water. Therefore, by the process of emulsification the insoluble substances are removed by water.

The major means of creating soaps is by means of the cold process and hot process and it is necessary to keep in mind that in both cases the method of saponification is vital for soap formation. Apart from these, there are various other means by implementing which soaps can be manufactured. Different kind of vegetable oils like olive oil, palm oil, coconut oil etc are prevalently used by various soap manufacturers to create soaps and pure olive oil soaps are referred to as Castile or Marseille soap. Soaps are also formed from fats and one of the most common ingredients in soaps is sodium tallowate and it is a constituent obtained from beef fat. Hard soaps can be produced from the reaction between fat and sodium hydroxide. Potassium hydroxide can also be used in soap formation.

The first evidence of soap making dates from the ancient world, around 2800 B. C. Archaeologists found clay cylinders left by the Mesopotamian civilization that had been coated with a soap-like substance inside. Once the archeologists deciphered the inscriptions on the cylinders, they were surprised to find a description of fats being boiled with ashes--the basic method of making soap. Intriguingly, these early cylinders didn't describe what this soap-like substance was used for, and so archeologists are left to guess.

As in Mesopotamia, so too did archaeologists find Pharaonic artifacts that attest to ways to make soap. A medical text written on papyrus, the Ebers Papyrus dating to 1500, outlines a method to combine animal and vegetable fats with alkaline salts. The resulting soap-like material could be used for bathing, or as a topical treatment for skin diseases. Biblical evidences suggest that a third ancient civilization, the Israelites, knew how to mix ashes and vegetable oils to produce something a great deal like hair gel. By the second century A.D., Alexandria's famous physician, Galens, recommended that his patients use soap as a topical ointment, as well as to keep clean.

The Mediterranean civilizations--Greece and Rome--preferred to wash without soap, but they learned about soap form the people they colonized. Pompeii's ruins included a soap factory, complete with a batch of soap. Both Greeks and Romans cleaned their bodies by rubbing them with oil, and then scraping the oil off with metal instruments or pumice stones. Ancient Germans and the Gauls made their own soap out from ashes mixed with animal fat, and they used it to decorate their hair.

Europeans started to use soap to clean their bodies in the Renaissance, and once soap came to be widely used for personal cleanliness, its chemical formula didn't change much. The soap made by the American colonists (that you can watch made at any open-air museum) is much the same soap that has been made since the Renaissance. The person making soap would collect lye by dripping water through wood ashes, and then mix the resulting lye with animal or vegetable fat to make soap.

Everything in today's world is turning green. No, I don't mean like everything is looking like Kermit the frog, I mean everyone is finally looking at the environment and their life styles and products they use. One in particular I have noticed and it seems to be the rage, is handmade soap products.

This is turning out to be a new sensation, and why not? It costs a little more, but the end result is a cleaner environment and a better product for your body. Instead of using a detergent bar that the big manufactures try to pass off as soap, which by the way is just a chemical filled hardened bar of detergent. Hmm, might as well just jump in the washing machine and put your self on spin. There is no substitute for a good cold processed handmade soap. Good things come to those who wait, and the process for this takes time. Soap has to cure, you cant just slap it out in a mass production factory and expect it to be effective, it just doesn't work that way. It's really hard to describe the difference until you actually try it, no itching and scratching because of the dry skin affect that those detergent bars have, instead your skin feels soft and the fragrance lasts.

Anytime you can purchase something that has been made by hand, 9 out of 10 times your going to find something that you cant live without. Your going to find that soap that used to dry you out or wouldn't last as long, has been substituted for good ole fashioned hand made products like cold process soap. Remember, the process for handmade soap is still the same as it always has been, only now we can choose to use it instead of using mass produced detergent in a bar shape form, and soapers are getting creative adding different oils and butters to improve them even further.

Kermit the frog sang a song "It's not easy being green" but I am here to tell you, the new soap obsession is handmade soap and it's real easy to be green.

Actually I did not gather up the courage to make soap until I met someone who was a soap maker. She actually invited me to here house and once I saw her making soap, I realized I could make soap for myself.

In this article I will be talking about making goat milk soap, but the process is the same for any soap that you make. So even if you want to make something that is not a milk soap, this process will work for you too. As we walk through it together you will see how simple it is.

There are 3 different ways to make goat milk soap. The first way will be with goat milk powder, but you can also use can goat milk and fresh goat milk. To get started you going to need oats, a blender, a scale and a sifter. You will also need the goat milk powder, fragrance, a stainless steel pot and a plastic measuring container. Never mix in anything other than stainless steel or glass.

A huge tapered edge glass container, a couple of thermometers, and a few scooping utensils for getting the oils into the mixing container. Most sunburns can be treated at home. If you notice yourself, friend, or family member beginning to burn, immediately get out of the sun. If this is not possible, move to a shady spot and apply sunscreen. Also, cover exposed areas to keep from further irritation.
Relief can also come from anti-inflammatories and pain relievers like aspirin and ibuprofen. Placing cool compresses on skin can relieve pain. Taking a cool, but not cold, bath can also help sunburned skin. Avoid bath salts, perfumes, or oils because they can further irritate your skin. Using an aloe vera gel or lotion, or other drugstore treatment can help relieve skin. Do not apply butter or oil to sunburns.
Until the sunburn has healed, stay out of the sun and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Dehydration is frequently a by-product of a sunburn. Avoid drinking alcohol because it can dehydrate skin further.
Use a sunburn Over-The-Counter remedy containing aloe vera. Use a light moisturizer or a dusting of powder to relieve chafing. Avoid perfumes or scented items. * Use Over-the-counter analgesics to relieve the pain and headache and reduce the fever.
Use an OTC topical steroid cream such as Cortaid if the pain persists. Don't use local anesthetic creams or sprays that numb pain such as Benzocaine. They can cause allergic reactions in some people.
Rest in a comfortable position, in a cool, quiet room. Stay out of the sun.
Chemical sunscreens
Chemical sunscreens absorb the harmful ultraviolet light to protect the skin against sunburn. Because different chemicals have varying effects on UVA and UVB protection, a combination of chemicals is usually used in sunscreens. Chemical sunscreens should be applied at least 15 minutes before sun exposure, to make the chemicals — cinnamates, octocrylene and the less commonly used para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) and derivatives — more active on the skin.
Physical sunscreens
Physical sunscreens deflect UV radiation from the skin rather than absorb it. Zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are particularly effective, especially for the nose and ears. The spectrum of titanium dioxide protection extends into the UVA range and so it is often included in combinations with chemical sunscreens.
Drink plenty of fluids to replace the water lost through sweating in the sun, and to cool down. Do not drink alcohol because it will dehydrate you further.
For mild sunburn, apply a moisturising lotion or a special aftersun cream from a pharmacy. Aftersun helps to cool the skin as well as moisturising and relieving the feeling of tightness. Calamine lotion can also be used to relieve itching and soreness.
For adults, painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen can help relieve pain and reduce swelling.
