The first evidence of soap making dates from the ancient world, around 2800 B. C. Archaeologists found clay cylinders left by the Mesopotamian civilization that had been coated with a soap-like substance inside. A medical text written on papyrus, the Ebers Papyrus dating to 1500, outlines a method to combine animal and vegetable fats with alkaline salts. The resulting soap-like material could be used for bathing, or as a topical treatment for skin diseases. Biblical evidences suggest that a third ancient civilization, the Israelites, knew how to mix ashes and vegetable oils to produce something a great deal like hair gel. By the second century A.D., Alexandria's famous physician, Galens, recommended that his patients use soap as a topical ointment, as well as to keep clean.

The Mediterranean civilizations--Greece and Rome--preferred to wash without soap, but they learned about soap form the people they colonized. Pompeii's ruins included a soap factory, complete with a batch of soap. Both Greeks and Romans cleaned their bodies by rubbing them with oil, and then scraping the oil off with metal instruments or pumice stones. Ancient Germans and the Gauls made their own soap out from ashes mixed with animal fat, and they used it to decorate their hair.

Europeans started to use soap to clean their bodies in the Renaissance, and once soap came to be widely used for personal cleanliness, its chemical formula didn't change much. The soap made by the American colonists (that you can watch made at any open-air museum) is much the same soap that has been made since the Renaissance. The person making soap would collect lye by dripping water through wood ashes, and then mix the resulting lye with animal or vegetable fat to make soap.

One of the main things that you need to remember with soap making is safety. Many of the soaps that people make have an ingredient in them called Lye. Lye is something that has been around for centuries and is one of the oldest types of soaps known. This ingredient can be made by filling a hopper full of ashes and then pouring water through it and catching the water that comes out. Of course there are many types of Lye available online or in hardware stores making it easier than ever to make Lye soap. If you were to use the soap right away it would turn to mush in a short amount of time. I guess you could say that one of the necessary ingredients for soap making is patience as well. You need your lye or your glycerin, but it'll never happen without the patience.

With this technique, you create your product completely from scratch through a chemical reaction called saponification. Saponification occurs when sodium hydroxide (lye) mixes with an acid (a variety of common cooking oils) to form a salt. The salt produced is your mild homemade soap.

The hot process soap making method is exactly the same as the cold process method except that heat is applied to speed up saponification. Only use this technique if you must produce soap quickly as there are countless obstacles that need to be avoided in order to make a successful batch.

The milled soap making method is a mix between melt and pour soap making and cold process soap making. With this technique, you basically create your own simple soap base, allow it to cure and then grate and re-melt it to add the extra nutrients. This method is most often used to save botched soap batches and bars that have lost their scent or color. Instead of throwing away and wasting these unsatisfactory products, simply re-melt them and add some new ingredients. The milled soap making method is also helpful when dealing with elements that shouldn't come into contact with active sodium hydroxide (lye).

Hot process soap making is simply a variation of the cold process method of soap making. Making soap via the hot process method is at times the method preferred by soap makers because they have the option of creating soaps from scratch. In addition, this method is combined with the science of creating the soap from beginning to end. Furthermore, cooking the soap thoroughly eliminates the long cure time for soap as compared to the cold process soap making method.

When using the hot process method, the soap ingredients are added to a cooking vessel and placed over some type of heat source. The most commonly used vessels are a stove, microwave, or even a crock pot. After being "cooked", the mixture is poured into a mold and the excess water is allowed to evaporate. Once the mixture is entirely cooled it be may be un-molded and used.

The hot process soap method is an excellent choice for individuals who want to customize soap recipes to include a wide range of the base ingredients of their choice but do not want to wait for the extended cure time for the soap to be completed.

While the hot process soap making is simple, it is a technique that requires practice and patience. Many expert soap makers agree that it is best attempted after an individual has mastered the cold process soap making technique as well as the melt and pour methods of soap making.

The following instructions will provide you with the necessary techniques to employ with the hot process method recipe. Note: Olive oil should not be used with the hot process soap method because of the delicate composition of olive oil soaps.

Before starting the hot process method, make sure you have all of the necessary equipment ready to use and the ingredients prepared that are called for in the recipe.

You will need the following equipment for the hot process method:

o One large pot

o A heat source. Use a stove, double boiler, crock pot or microwave safe container and a microwave.

o A soap mold and freezer paper or waxed paper. The freezer paper or waxed paper is used for lining the mold. If you do not line the mold it will be very difficult to remove the soap. Wooden soap molds work best for hot process soap.

o Add your water to the pot and then heat it gently. Slowly add lye to the water and dissolve. Important note: never add water to lye. Always add the lye to the water.

o Add the fats in the recipes such as: coconut oil, sesame oil, and shea butter.

o Allow your soap mixture to boil until it reaches saponification. Saponification is complete when the soap begins to form inside the cooking utensil.

After saponification is complete, take the soap off of the heat source and then use a spatula to assist in pouring the mixture into soap molds that have been lined with freezer or wax paper. When using freezer paper, make sure you have it shiny side facing up.

Allow your soap to set up and when it is time to remove it from the mold, gently un-mold the soap from the molds. The soap will be slightly sticky, but rest assured that this is normal. However, after it cures for about three to four weeks it will dry out enough to remove the stickiness from its texture.
